A couple of days before we went to Orkney one of the chickens went missing. We couldn't find her anywhere but, as there were no feathers lying about, and as the rest of the flock wasn't spooked, we guessed that she hadn't been eaten.
We assumed that she had moved in with our neighbours who have a very attractive pile of manure that all our chickens love.
Yesterday Jasmine started falsetto barking at a flower bed. I went to investigate - it is usually a toad, sometimes a hedgehog.
And this is what I found
10 brand new chicks. We must have been walking past her nest for the past 3 weeks.
They have been moved to a safer place for a few days - to stop cats and buzzards deciding to have a nice snack.
