When the girls were little we lit candles every Friday night and discussed what we were happy and sad about in the week.
I don't remember when, or why, we stopped. I suspect it was when Euan's working hours got better and the girls began to have later bedtimes so that almost every dinner is eaten as a family and the discipline of a ritual is less important.
On Saturday we lit candles again - turning out the lights to join in the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour at 8.30 pm.
Zoe got her guitar and played songs that she knew without needing to see where her fingers were - Mary Chapin Carpenter, Tift Merritt, Adele and a LOT of Sugarlands - while Katie and I sang along to whichever bits we could remember. It was a bit like an indoor campfire.
The only member of the family who didn't enjoy the experience was Jasmine who found the whole process rather stressful and wouldn't settle at all - pacing round and round the darkened kitchen sporadically barking as though it were bonfire night.
